Travel has come a long way in last century, with more people wanting to travel abroad, and more ways to do so. Up until recently, not many people dared to venture out of their home country, it was difficult, expensive and time consuming. But in the last hundred years, planes have become much more widely used and much more affordable, budget airlines now give away online tickets abroad for next to nothing.
There are also more hotels popping up, even the furthest corners of the world. Hotels have come a long way since bed and breakfasts were the main form of lodgings, but they’re constantly upping their promises of luxury and technology, so we can surely expect to see some impressive upgrades to the basic hotel room.
As for methods of travel, they seem to have been constantly developing for centuries. From the carriage we developed the motorised car, and after boats and ships we developed planes. But planes are where we’ve reached a point of stand still. Of course planes and the technology behind them is always improving but where do we go from here? Judging by the progress of the last few centuries, we always manage to find better, bigger and faster methods of travel, so what should we expect next?
New and improved hotel stays
Hotels might seem to basic to transform travel too much, after all, all you really need is a basic room with a bed, a bathroom, perhaps a TV etc. But hotels all around the world are thinking of ways to up their game, and be the hotels of the future.
Spas are becoming increasingly popular, as people start to care more about pampering themselves and looking after their skin, and already we’ve seen in shift in the bathrooms of hotels to create a more spa like experience. Bigger baths with Jacuzzi features, showers that simulate rain fall, and pampering products are all bathroom features being added to luxury hotel rooms. In the future, we might consider hotels without these features as below standard. You can choose from wide variety hotels and rooms from Airbnb or booking.com platforms online. Thanks to the internet – the booking process became very easy and fast.
Hotel rooms might also see a shift towards a more minimalist layout. Of course there’ll still be TVs, storage space and a nice comfy bed, but the rooms will appear to only have essentials, rather than being cluttered with tea and coffee sachets, leaflets, fridges and the likes. A smaller and less cluttered room has a more positive energy to it, and with increasing value being placed on mindfulness, it’s likely that hotels will do their best to create a positive space for guests.
Alongside mindfulness, more value is also being placed on the importance of sleep, as the realization that we spend a third of our lives asleep kicks in. Even now, hotels base their advertising around the promise of a good nights sleep, so we can expect to see hotels focus on high-quality mattresses, beds and bedding.
Hotels are also becoming more high tech, and this is something we can expect to see more of in the future. We’re talking smart controls of lighting and temperature, probably controlled remotely by smart phones, or perhaps through voice control – a feature of technology that’s growing in popularity and efficiency.
New methods of travel
The way we travel is perhaps the most interesting aspect of future travel. At the moment it can be difficult to imagine transport developing much further, it already seems to be efficient and impressive. But there are definitely those who have visions for the future.
Testing of Elon Musk’s Hyperloop is already underway, which hopes to travel at nearly three times the speed of sound. Whilst visions for that remain within America at the moment, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t develop further and provide international travel in the future.
There are also constant developments in space travel, and even talk of ordinary civilians being able to travel into space in the near future. If space travel develops enough to allow this, the entire travel industry might be completely different, with families scheduling trips to the moon rather than Disney World.
Perhaps on a more realistic basis, there’s also talk of alternative transport across the Atlantic, other than planes. The transatlantic tunnel has been under discussion for decades, and whilst we’re not yet there in terms of knowledge or technology, it may well be the future of transatlantic travel.
